Bio Filter Media Metabolize Rates
Based on Bio Media Specific Surface Area (SSA)
Fish Waste
SSA x 0.2 = Grams of Fish Waste Metabolized per 24 Hours
Nitrifying Bacteria metabolize an average of 0.2 grams of fish waste per square foot of bio media per 24 hours.
Example: 100 (SSA) x 0.2 = 20 grams of fish waste per 24 hours.
Example: The Ahi Hydro Vortex™ filter has 677 square feet of Specific Surface Area (SSA):
(677 x 0.2 = 135.4), thus the Ahi with its 677 SSA of bio film can metabolize 135.40 grams of fish waste per day.
Ammonia
SSA ÷ 50 = Grams of Ammonia Metabolized per 24 Hours
Nitrifying Bacteria metabolize an average of 1 gram of ammonia per 50 square feet of bio media per 24 hours.
Example: 100 (SSA) ÷ 50 = 2 grams of ammonia per 24 hours.
Example: The Ahi Hydro Vortex™ filter has 677 square feet of Specific Surface Area (SSA): (677 ÷ 50 = 13.54) thus the Ahi with its 677 SSA can metabolize 13.54 grams, or 13,540 milligrams of ammonia per day.
